Tributes paid to Castlebar councillors before they step down

The people of Carnacon paid special tribute to retiring Councillors Paddy McGuinness and Johnny Mee at the Castlebar electoral area meeting held in the village last Friday night. The area meeting was moved out of the county town to pay tribute to the Carnacon ladies’ GAA team who captured their third All-Ireland senior football last year. Walter Hughes from the Carnacon Community Council welcomed the members to the village saying: “It’s a rare and unique achievement for a rural area to see All-Ireland titles come our way. We are delighted to have such an occasion to recognise the achievements and the honour the girls brought to the area.”

Cathaoirleach accuses Minister for Finance of insulting the people of Mayo

At the February meeting of Mayo County Council, a proposal was made by the Fine Gael whip Councillor Paddy McGuinness and agreed by all parties that a meeting would be sought with the Minister for Finance to discuss the €8 million reduction in the 2009 road allocations for the county. Further to this, at the April meeting, the Cathaoirleach informed the members that the delegation would comprise representatives from each of the five counties in Connacht.

Development plan victory for councillors over Green Minister

From the initial planning stages it has been a long struggle for the Mayo County Development Plan 2008 to 2014 to come to fruition to the satisfaction of the elected members and the Department of Environment and Local Government under the direction of Minister John Gormley. But last Monday the new development plan, which has taken up many hours of planning, discussion, meetings and angry exchanges across the country, finally came to a conclusion when the elected members voted in favour of a new ministerial directive issued by Minister for the Environment John Gormley on September 16 2009, overturning his previous directive of July 11 2008.

Mayo county councillors racked up more than €800K in six months

Figures released by Mayo County Council under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that Mayo county councillors were paid out €836,212 from January to the end of June 2009, all relating to the six months pre-election. Independent Castlebar Councillor Frank Durcan who sought this information said that these figures are “immoral in the times that are in it”.
